Xiaolian Zhang is a composer and sound artist based in London, UK. His work in experimental music involves a critical and academic exploration of the social-political status quo, as well as an exploration of his Chinese cultural heritage through sonic experimentation. Zhang's focus lies in utilising studio-based music technologies such as modular and granular synthesis, as well as employing innovative approaches to incorporate found sounds, voices, and instruments in order to generate a unique sonic spectrum. Throughout the process of creating music, he embraces the accidental glitches that emerge from the sonic experience, merging them with hardware and software synthesisers to craft imaginative and ever-evolving soundscapes. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Zhang is an accomplished educator, recognised as an Associate Fellow at the Higher Education Academy. He teaches composition, sound design, and music technologies at multiple higher education institutions.
